The ownership, your plates off, your things out. That is most of it.
The ownership
Every car we buy has to be yours, and the way you show that is the ownership: the green permit from ServiceOntario. It has two halves. The vehicle portion is the one we need. You sign it over to us on pickup day and our driver takes it with the car. The plate portion stays with you.
Can’t find it? Say so on the first call. ServiceOntario can issue a replacement, and the car can sit where it is until you have it. Get your number from us first, then go and get the replacement. If the number doesn’t work for you, you haven’t spent money for nothing.
Your plates
The plates stay with you. Take them off before the truck comes, or ask the driver for a screwdriver. Put them on your next car, or hand them back to ServiceOntario if you won’t be driving for a while.
Your things
Glovebox, trunk, door pockets, under the seats, the tray by the shifter. The two things people forget most are the garage door opener on the visor and the toll transponder on the windshield. Child seats too. Once the car is in the yard it gets drained and stripped, and nobody is going through it looking for your sunglasses.
Keys
Keys help but aren’t needed. A car with no keys still goes on the flatbed; it just takes the driver a few more minutes. If you have them, hand them over with the ownership.
Insurance
Call your insurer after the car is gone. If a pickup has to move by a day, you don’t want a car sitting in your driveway with no coverage on it.
Does it have to run?
No. Running, not running, wrecked, flooded, no wheels. Tell us what shape it’s in when you call and the number we give you already allows for it.
Selling it for someone else?
A parent’s car, or one a tenant left behind: it comes up often. Call and tell us whose name is on the ownership. What we can do depends on the paperwork, so it’s better to sort that out on the phone than on the driveway.
Nothing to fill in ahead of time. The driver brings the bill of sale, you sign the vehicle portion over, and the car is ours to deal with.
